Starting a business is one of the most exciting — and humbling — things you can do.
When I launched TaggEt Dezignz, I had passion, vision, and drive. What I didn't have was a roadmap. Here are 5 things I wish someone had told me before I took the leap.
1. Your Brand Is More Than a Logo
I thought branding meant having a cute logo and matching colors. But your brand is your voice, your values, the feeling people get when they interact with your business. Before you design anything, get clear on who you are and who you're for. People don’t just buy what you make — they buy why you make it.
Your story, your voice, your style, your culture, your perspective… that’s what makes your brand stand out. Once I leaned into who I am and stopped trying to fit into what everyone else was doing, my business felt more real and more aligned.
2. Cash Flow Is Everything
You can have a full order book and still go broke if your timing is off. I learned quickly that managing money in and money out — not just profit — is what keeps the lights on. Track every dollar from day one. Your pricing should respect your time, not your fear. Low prices don’t attract the right customers — they attract people who don’t value your work. Once I learned to price based on time, materials, skill, and effort, everything changed.
3. Done Is Better Than Perfect
I waited too long to launch because I wanted everything to be perfect. Spoiler: it never is. Your first collection, your first website, your first post — none of it will be perfect. Launch anyway. Improve as you go. When you’re starting out, it’s easy to feel like you need the best equipment, the perfect website, the full setup, and a whole brand identity on day one.
Truth is: you don’t. You can start small, start simple, and grow as you go. Most of the things I thought I “needed” ended up being things I didn’t use until much later.
4. Community Over Competition
Other brands in your space are not your enemies. Some of my best connections have come from other small business owners. Collaborate, support, and uplift — it comes back around. A little progress every week beats big bursts of energy once in a while.
5. Invest in What You Don't Know
Whether it's accounting, marketing, or tech — don't let pride keep you stuck. Hire help, take a course, ask questions. The fastest way to grow is to fill your knowledge gaps, not ignore them.
💬 Closing Thought
If you’re building something right now, keep going. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to start, learn, adjust, and stay true to what you’re creating. The rest comes with time.
